Course description

This course is designed to address applicable OSHA and Cal/OSHA training requirements for employees who operate Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs). Participants will learn to recognize potential hazards associated with MEWP operation and understand the capabilities, limitations, and proper use of the equipment. The course emphasizes safe operating practices, including pre-use inspections, workplace hazard assessments, fall protection, stability, emergency procedures, and the responsibilities of MEWP operators. Upon completion, participants will have the knowledge necessary to operate MEWPs safely and in accordance with applicable workplace safety requirements.

This certification is valid once the MEWPs operator completes the hands-on profeciency demonstration in front of a qualified person.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss changes to the ANSI/SAIA A92.22
  2. Identify national consensus standards for MEWPs
  3. Recognize common hazards associated with the use of MEWPs
  4. Discuss fall protection and other required personal protective equipment
  5. Demonstrate concepts of pre-operational inspections
  6. Describe the process of equipment familiarization
  7. Demonstrate safe operation according to the manufacturer’s recommendations

Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) Operator Training

Proficiency Demonstration
This phase of General Operator Training requires the trainee to operate a machine category (e.g., boom lifts or scissor lifts) for a sufficient period under a qualified trainer's observation to prove they can inspect and handle the equipment safely. This module contains digital forms that can be dowloaded by clicking on the Exercise File button. Both forms must be kept for records to show that the procifiecy demonstration was completed. The digital certificate provided is sufficient proof of training when requested by field personnel. This certification is invalid without the proficiency demonstration.

Familiarization
Complete the Familiarization quiz first and then complete the familiarization form with a qualified person. Familiarization is required for MEWPs training, as it is a separate but mandatory step after initial training. Familiarization is needed for any MEWP that is significantly different from the one on which the operator was trained.

Qualified Person
Under the ANSI A92 standards, a qualified person is defined as one who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate, or professional standing, or by extensive knowledge, training, and experience, has successfully demonstrated the ability to solve or resolve problems related to the subject matter, the work, or the project.
